Wedgewood-Houston Weekly Briefing October 19–25, 2026

This week in brief. I-65 is moving again, but Hamilton Avenue stays closed into December, which puts more weight on Chestnut Street and Wedgewood Avenue during a week when The Truth has a show every night and the Nashville Flea Market returns to the Fairgrounds. Meanwhile, the Fairgrounds housing referendum cleared its signature threshold and now heads toward an August 2027 ballot, with legal challenges still pending. Plan routes early, and read the referendum section before forming a view.

1  I-65 has reopened; Hamilton Avenue remains closed

I-65 reopened Sunday night after crews demolished the Hamilton Avenue bridge deck. Reconstruction continues, so expect intermittent overnight interstate lane closures between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m., with completion anticipated in December. The Hamilton Avenue crossing remains closed to both vehicles and pedestrians, and TDOT is directing motorists to Chestnut Street or Wedgewood Avenue instead.

Neighborhood impact: Keep giving customers, employees and delivery drivers alternate directions, and allow extra time on the remaining east–west crossings, especially around evening events.

2  Fairgrounds referendum advances, with legal disputes unresolved

On October 16, the Election Commission voted 4–0, with one abstention, to certify 47,679 valid signatures, above its stated requirement of 40,194. That moves the proposed charter amendment toward an August 2027 referendum, subject to legal challenges. Opponents allege forged signatures and misleading canvassing; petition organizers dispute claims of widespread misconduct.

What it means: Certification moves the ballot process forward. It does not itself close the speedway or approve a housing development. The proposal would replace racing’s charter protection with a path toward affordable or workforce housing, but financing and implementation remain unresolved.

Residents and businesses should press both sides for specific commitments on:

  • Housing affordability levels and delivery date.

  • Public cost

  • Green-space access

  • Racing noise limits

  • Transportation improvements

3  A busy concert week brings customers—and transportation pressure

The Truth lists shows every night this week, including Sting tonight and Tuesday, Rawayana on Wednesday, The Smashing Pumpkins on Thursday and Kevin Gates on Saturday. The venue’s designated rideshare pickup and drop-off point is Hagan Street and Merritt Avenue.

Neighborhood impact: Restaurants and shops have a real opportunity for pre- and post-show business; review staffing, reservation timing and parking instructions now. Residents should plan for concentrated arrivals before shows and departures afterward, made heavier this week with Hamilton Avenue unavailable.

4  Nashville Flea Market returns this weekend

The Fairgrounds’ October market runs Friday through Sunday, October 23–25:

  • Friday and Saturday: 8 a.m.–5 p.m.

  • Sunday: 8 a.m.–4 p.m.

Neighborhood impact: Businesses can plan daytime promotions around market visitors. Residents and delivery operators should allow extra time near Fairgrounds entrances.

5  Business openings to watch

Nashville Guru currently lists Kollective for October 30 and Perenn Grocery for October, with La Matera and Wedgewood Sports Lounge expected in fall 2026. These are announced or expected dates, not confirmed ones, so check with each business before visiting.

6  Metro Council meets Tuesday

The next Metro Council meeting is Tuesday, October 20, at 6:30 p.m. at the Historic Metro Courthouse. The agenda and viewing options are posted on the Council’s official meeting page. This is a citywide meeting, and no Wedgewood-Houston-specific item has been confirmed on the agenda; check the published agenda for anything affecting the neighborhood.
